Frequently Asked Questions What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy treatments include therapeutic exercises and skilled hands-on therapy to help patients who have suffered limited function and movement as a result of injury, aging, or disease. Working one-on-one with patients with a focused, individualized program, physical therapy treatment helps patients maximize movement and mobility, reduce pain, and increase fitness for an enhanced quality of life. What may I expect during my first visit? During your initial evaluation, your therapist will gather information about your symptoms, condition and medical history and perform a physical exam including objective measurements and testing. The therapist will discuss your rehabilitation goals and educate you about your condition and what you may expect from your treatment sessions. After the evaluation, your therapist will develop a comprehensive physical therapy treatment program to meet your individual requirements and objectives. A complete report of the evaluation findings and a description of the treatment program will be sent to your healthcare provider along with later progress reports in order to maintain full and open communication with all members of your healthcare team. What do I need to bring to my first visit? You should bring your prescription, insurance information, and any other paperwork that you may have been provided, including X-rays or MRI results. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and bring any crutches, splint, or brace that you may be using. What type of insurance do you accept? We participate in many insurance plans, Medicare, Worker’s Compensation, and auto insurance claims. We will verify your insurance benefits and inform you of your coverage at your initial evaluation. To do this, we require your insurance company name and phone number, your identification number, and date of birth. You may wish to contact your insurance provider for information about your insurance coverage before your first visit. If we are an out-of-network provider, your insurance may authorize benefits at a reduced rate. We also accept cash payments from those who do not have insurance coverage. What may I expect during treatment visits? Your physical therapy treatment sessions will usually last about an hour, working with your therapist to meet the goals outlined in your treatment plan. Depending on your specific needs, the sessions may involve therapeutic exercises with our state-of-the-art exercise equipment and/or manual therapy. Open communication with your therapist is important to ensure the best possible outcome of your physical therapy. Your therapist needs for you to ask questions if you don’t understand the treatment so that you are fully informed at every step to stay involved in your treatment. It’s important to tell your therapist if you’re in pain, since that can be a warning sign. Your therapist will likely give you exercises to do at home in between your physical therapy sessions. It is very important to your recovery to do the exercises exactly and as often as prescribed. It will help you to heal faster, reduce pain, and restore movement and function to meet your treatment goals. What is manual therapy? Manual therapy, or hands-on therapy, includes soft tissue therapy to relax muscles, break up scar tissue, and increase circulation to reduce inflammation. It may also include mobilization and manipulation of joints that can help reduce pain in joints and tissues surrounding a joint, and assist with flexibility. Manual therapy is used to relieve a wide range of conditions, including back pain, muscle spasms, neck pain, leg and hip joint conditions, hand, arm, and shoulder problems, and accident-related injuries. Do you provide nutritional guidance? We believe that good nutrition is a very important part of healing so we consult with you on your dietary requirements to ensure your body has the nutrients it requires from a healthy, balanced diet. We will work with you and your lifestyle requirements to help you make the right choices for your body’s needs. Is there follow-up after my physical therapy treatments are concluded? Yes. Your therapist will provide you with a home exercise program to allow you to continue your progress and help to prevent further injury. We are always available to answer any questions you may have. May I continue to use your great facility after my physical therapy discharge? Absolutely! We encourage it.
